The Beauty of Knowing God Fully Through the Holy Spirit
A Childhood Filled With Worship
Before I knew much of the Bible beyond children's Bible stories, I spent hours in my bedroom as a child worshipping God. I would turn on my boombox, play worship music, and pray. Those moments were filled with joy, wonder, and adoration for my Savior.
During that season, the Lord would gently impress things upon my heart. Through a quiet whisper, He would guide, encourage, and draw me closer to Him. Looking back, I do not remember a time when I did not know the Lord or recognize His voice.
The Two Extremes Christians Often Embrace
The longer I serve in ministry, the more I notice that many believers tend to lean toward one of two extremes.
Some pursue spiritual experiences but neglect God's Word. Others know Scripture well but struggle to cultivate an intimate relationship with God.
The truth is that both are essential.
God never intended for us to choose between knowing His Word and knowing His presence. He desires that we be rooted in truth while also walking closely with Him.
Receiving All of God
We often feel most comfortable relating to one aspect of God's nature. Some connect deeply with God as Father. Others focus primarily on Jesus. Still others emphasize the work of the Holy Spirit.
But God is not divided.
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three distinct Persons existing in perfect unity. To experience all that God has for us, we must be willing to receive all that He reveals about Himself.
Why Understanding the Holy Spirit Matters
Jesus warned His followers that deception would increase in the last days:
"Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people." (Matthew 24:11)
The Greek word for deceive, planaō, means to wander from the right path or to be led astray from truth.
As parents, leaders, and disciples of Christ, we must know God's Word and teach our children how to recognize His voice. The more familiar we are with the Lord, the less vulnerable we become to deception.
The Holy Spirit Reveals Jesus
The Holy Spirit's role has never been to draw attention to Himself. His purpose is to reveal Jesus.
Even John the Baptist recognized Jesus as the Messiah through the revelation of the Holy Spirit:
"The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit." (John 1:33)
From the beginning, the Holy Spirit has been pointing people toward Christ.
The Gift God Gives His Children
Scripture teaches that the Father delights in giving good gifts to His children.
Jesus said:
"How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13)
The Holy Spirit is not something to fear. He is a gift from a loving Father who desires to help, guide, and strengthen His children.
The Spirit of Truth
Before His crucifixion, Jesus told His disciples that it was actually better for Him to leave because the Father would send the Holy Spirit.
He described the Holy Spirit as our Advocate and the Spirit of Truth:
"He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth." (John 14:16-17)
The Holy Spirit leads us into truth, convicts us of sin, comforts us in difficulty, and helps us walk faithfully with God.
Empowered to Share the Gospel
Jesus also told His disciples to wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit before beginning their ministry.
Why?
Because God never intended for us to accomplish His mission in our own strength.
"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses..." (Acts 1:8)
The same Spirit who empowered the early church empowers believers today to live boldly and share the hope of Christ.
Evidence of a Spirit-Filled Life
A life surrendered to the Holy Spirit produces fruit.
Galatians 5 teaches that the evidence of God's work within us is seen through love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
The goal is not simply spiritual knowledge or spiritual experiences. The goal is to become more like Jesus.
Learning to Hear God's Voice
So how do we learn to recognize God's voice?
Jesus said that His sheep know His voice.
Like any relationship, familiarity develops through time spent together. As we consistently pray, worship, read Scripture, and obey God's leading, we become more attuned to His voice.
The more we know Him through His Word, the more confidently we recognize His guidance through His Spirit.
Experiencing All of God
God never intended for us to settle for a partial understanding of who He is.
He invites us to know Him fully—to embrace His truth, enjoy His presence, and walk daily with His Spirit.
When we receive all that God has given us, we are better equipped to discern truth, resist deception, and reflect Christ to the world around us.
Prayer:
God, thank You for Your faithfulness. From the very beginning, You have desired a relationship with Your creation. Thank You for making a way for me to be in a relationship with You through Jesus Christ.
As I faithfully spend time in Your Word, open my eyes to see You, my ears to hear You, and my heart to receive all that You have for me. Illuminate Your Word through the Holy Spirit and help me to understand and apply its truth to my life.
Thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Through Him, teach me to recognize and discern Your voice. Lead me in truth, guard me from deception, and help me to walk closely with You each day.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
